PREMIO MEJOR MEDIO DE PRENSA PUBLICADO EN LENGUA EXTRANJERA - MINISTERIO DE LA DIASPORA DE ARMENIA 2015
UGAB - Sam Simonian
President of AGBU
04 de Enero de 2025

The year 2024 marks a time of transitions, most notably when I assumed the position of eighth president of AGBU, succeeding Berge Setrakian. His remarkable 22-year presidency followed his decades of service on the AGBU Central Board. It is an honor to continue the tradition of delivering a year-end message.

This past October, the 93rd AGBU General Assembly was among the most vibrant and eventful in recent years. The change in leadership was an opportunity to reflect on AGBU’s two decades of growth and innovation while expressing our collective gratitude to outgoing AGBU President Berge Setrakian. He presided during some of the most momentous events in modern Armenian history and his emphasis on youth development has expanded our AGBU Young Professionals network around the world. This year alone, we welcomed six new YP groups from Amman, Budapest, and Cordoba to Dublin, Melbourne and Sydney.

As I begin my own journey as President of AGBU, I am committed to engaging closely with our local chapters across five continents. Starting with a trip to South America, I was touched by strong Armenian spirit in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. By this time next year, I aim to have a broader understanding of the Armenian world and the ties that unite our diverse communities.

In the meantime, other important transitions took place this year. Following the September 2023 displacement of Armenians from Artsakh, AGBU launched an extensive emergency relief effort to provide food, clothing, shelter and essential support. In 2024, we shifted our focus to long term assistance, addressing physical, mental and emotional recovery. We expanded the AGBU Claudia Nazarian Polyclinic with new specialists from Artsakh. We offered free well exams and mental health services. We also organized therapeutic weekend retreats through AGBU Camp Nairi for Artsakh mothers and children.

In addition, employment became a cornerstone project to help integrate Artsakh Armenians into Armenia’s socio-economic fabric. Building on the success of AGBU LEAP (Learn to Earn Artsakh Program), which flourished back in Artsakh, we added training in Armenia’s growth industries, English language coaching, and job counseling. These initiatives can go a long way to restore dignity and financial independence to this uprooted community.

Looking ahead, AGBU is poised to navigate the global challenges that will shape the world, the Armenian Nation and our organization. While the future remains uncertain, I am confident that AGBU will adapt and thrive, thanks to the generosity of our donors, the inspiration of our volunteers, and the cooperation of our local leaders and partners. Your continued goodwill and support will be vital as we work together to uplift Armenian lives worldwide.

Wishing you and your family peace and prosperity in the New Year.

Sincerely,

Sam Simonian
AGBU President
